Quality Tarmac Driveways, Laid Properly

Tarmac driveways remain the most popular choice for homeowners across Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent and London, and for good reason.

Tarmac is practical, quick to install, and its clean, neutral finish suits every style of house, from a modern new build to a period cottage.

Harrington Brothers has been laying tarmacadam for over 50 years, and we’ve built our reputation as a leading supplier of quality tarmac driveways on drives that still look sharp a decade on.

We serve Chelmsford, Epping, Brentwood and the surrounding areas across all four counties, offering attractive results at honest, affordable prices.

Around 90% of our work comes from recommendations and referrals, the strongest endorsement a surfacing firm can have.

Every driveway we lay is fully guaranteed and backed by £10m public liability insurance.

Tarmac Resurfacing & New Driveway Installation

We install brand new tarmac driveways and resurface existing ones.

In some cases tarmac can be laid over an existing asphalt drive, saving you the cost of a full excavation.

In others, the original driveway paving must come up and the sub-base be rebuilt to get a result that lasts.

We care about the longevity of your driveway, so we will always tell you straight which applies to yours, resurfacing over a failed base is money wasted.

A proper tarmac driveway is built in layers: a compacted sub-base for strength, a binder course for structure, and a surface course laid by hand on most driveways, or by our own paver where the area suits machine work, such as larger drives and forecourts, rolled to a smooth, even finish with crisp edges and correct falls for drainage.

It’s the preparation you can’t see that determines how long the surface you can see will last.

That’s where 50 years of experience earns its keep.

Why Homeowners Choose Tarmac

Tarmac earns its popularity on merit:

  • Durability, a properly laid tarmacadam drive handles daily vehicle traffic for many years with minimal upkeep.
  • Speed, most residential tarmac driveways are surfaced in a day or two once the base is prepared, so disruption is short.
  • Value, tarmac gives you the best cost per square metre of any hard driveway surface.
  • Looks, a smooth black finish frames the house neatly and pairs beautifully with block paved borders or edging kerbs.
  • Easy maintenance, no loose stones to rake, no joints to weed; an occasional sweep keeps it looking new.

We can also add decorative edging in contrasting block paving to lift the finish, a small detail that makes a big difference to kerb appeal.

If your existing tarmac drive is simply looking tired rather than failing, ask us about resurfacing.

A new surface course over a sound base can restore it for a fraction of the cost of full replacement.

From Driveways to New Roadways

Tarmacadam is one of our main trades, and we carry out many tarmacadam projects each year, it suits far more than driveways.

Our teams surface roads, car parks and access ways for councils and commercial clients, including work for Barnet, Hertsmere, Tower Hamlets and Brentwood councils.

Residential, commercial or local authority, we see every tarmacadam project through from start to finish, with the same machinery, materials and standards a highways contract demands.

Few domestic surfacing firms can say that.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a tarmac driveway cost?

It depends on the size of the drive, the condition of the existing surface and how much excavation and sub-base work is needed. Tarmac is typically the most cost-effective hard surface per square metre. We provide free, no obligation quotes with everything itemised, no surprises.

How long does a tarmac driveway last?

A properly installed tarmac driveway will typically last 15 years or more, often considerably longer. The key is what’s underneath: a well compacted sub-base and correct drainage. That’s why we guarantee every drive we lay.

Can you tarmac over my existing driveway?

Sometimes. Tarmac can be laid over sound asphalt, which saves time and money. If the existing surface or base has failed, it needs to be removed and replaced first, we’ll survey your drive and advise honestly on which route will give a lasting result.

How soon can I drive on a new tarmac driveway?

You can usually walk on it within a few hours and drive on it after two to three days, depending on the weather. In warm spells we may advise waiting a little longer so the surface fully hardens. We’ll give you clear guidance on the day.

Do I need planning permission for a tarmac driveway?

Not usually. Because tarmac is impermeable, driveways over 5 square metres need rainwater to drain to a permeable area within your property, a flower bed, lawn or soakaway. We design the falls and drainage in as standard, so permission is rarely required.

Is your tarmac work guaranteed?

Yes. All our surfacing is fully guaranteed and we carry £10m public liability insurance. We’re a family firm with over 50 years in the trade, accredited by SafeContractor, CHAS and Constructionline.
