Driveway Resurfacing & New Driveways

Driveway resurfacing is what we do best.

For more than 50 years, Harrington Brothers has installed and resurfaced driveways across Chelmsford, Epping, Brentwood and the wider four counties, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent and London.

A driveway is the first thing anyone sees of your home.

Done properly, it adds kerb appeal, adds value and lasts for decades.

We handle every stage ourselves: excavation, sub-base preparation, drainage and the finished surface.

We install new driveways for new build properties and resurface existing drives that have had their day, using only the highest quality paving stones and slabs.

Because we stock matching patio paving too, you can tie the whole frontage and garden together in one low maintenance scheme.

Our fitters work with precision, work quickly and leave the site clean.

Around 90% of our work comes from recommendations and referrals, every surface is fully guaranteed, and we carry £10m public liability insurance. Every photo in our gallery is our own work, straight from the tools.

Tarmac Driveways

The classic choice, and still one of the best.

Tarmac driveways are practical, quick to install and tough enough to shrug off daily traffic for years, and the clean, neutral finish suits any style of house, from modern to traditional.

We machine lay where appropriate and hand lay over a properly compacted sub-base, and we surface new tarmac drives as well as resurfacing existing ones.

Torn between the two most popular surfaces?

Our guide to tarmac versus resin weighs them up honestly.

Resin Driveways

Resin driveways are the modern low maintenance option: resin bound aggregate is fully permeable, so rainwater drains straight through the surface.

That makes it SUDS compliant, kind to the environment and ideal for urban plots, properties at risk of flood damage and anyone who wants planning friendly drainage without gullies and channels.

It comes in a wide range of natural stone colours and blends.

Block Paving & Sandstone Driveways

For a softer, more natural look, block paving and sandstone driveways are hard to beat.

With different colours, shades and laying patterns to choose from, block paving lets you put real personality into your driveway, and individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if access is ever needed below.

Sandstone brings a warmth and rustic character that only improves with age, and we can match your drive to your patio for one continuous scheme.

Shingle Driveways

Easy to lay and naturally attractive, shingle driveways are a great alternative to hard brick paving.

Laid over a prepared base with proper edging, shingle drains freely, crunches reassuringly underfoot and comes in a variety of colours and stone sizes for a look that is entirely your own.

It is also one of the most cost-effective ways to smarten up a frontage, and because shingle is permeable it rarely needs planning permission.

Frequently asked questions

Which driveway surface is best for my home?

It depends on the property, the drainage and the look you want. Tarmac is the durable all rounder, resin is permeable and low maintenance, block paving and sandstone give the most character, and shingle is the most cost-effective. We survey your driveway and recommend honestly, most of our work comes from referrals, so we only recommend what we would put on our own homes.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

Usually not. Permeable surfaces such as resin bound and shingle generally fall under permitted development. If you want an impermeable surface like tarmac over 5 square metres, rainwater must drain to a permeable area within your boundary, we design this in as standard, so planning permission is rarely needed.

Can you resurface my existing driveway rather than replace it?

Often, yes. If the existing sub-base is sound, resurfacing is quicker and cheaper than a full dig out. If the base has failed, we will tell you straight, resurfacing over a bad base is money wasted, and we guarantee our work, so we only do it properly.

How long does a new driveway take to install?

Most residential driveways take between two and five days depending on size, surface type and how much excavation is needed. We agree the schedule with you up front and work to fit your timescales, keeping disruption to your household to a minimum.

Is your driveway work guaranteed?

Yes. Every surface we install is fully guaranteed, and we carry £10m public liability insurance. Harrington Brothers is a family run firm with over 50 years in surfacing, we stand behind every drive we lay.

Do you offer finance on driveways?

Yes. Through Ideal4Finance we offer 0% APR over 12 months, plus longer terms at 11.9% APR (36-60 months) and 10.9% APR over 120 months. A deposit may apply and finance is subject to status. Ask for details when you request your free quote.
