Expert Block Paving Driveways

Block paving driveways bring something no poured or rolled surface can: character. Harrington Brothers has installed block paving across Chelmsford, Epping, Brentwood and the surrounding areas of Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent and London for over 50 years, and it remains one of our most requested residential services.

We use high quality paving stones to produce beautiful, durable driveways, laid over a properly compacted sub-base with correct falls, edge restraints and jointing, the details that decide whether a drive stays level for decades or ruts within a couple of winters.

We can also match the driveway to your patio paving for a flowing, continuous look that lifts the whole frontage and adds a genuinely luxurious feel to your home.

Every installation is fully guaranteed, we carry £10m public liability insurance, and around 90% of our work comes from recommendations and referrals.

Sandstone Driveways & Natural Stone Paving

For warmth and rustic charm, nothing beats natural stone.

A sandstone driveway is low maintenance and attractive, and each stone carries its own natural variation in tone and texture, so no two drives are ever quite the same.

Sandstone weathers gracefully too, it looks better at ten years old than the day it was laid.

We stock a huge range of paving stones in different shapes, colours and sizes.

Prefer a minimal, modern aesthetic with clean lines and cool greys?

Or something with a little more rustic character in warm buffs and browns?

We’ll have the right driveway stones for you.

Herringbone, basketweave, stretcher bond or bespoke patterns with contrasting borders, the choice is yours, and we’ll bring samples so you can decide at home.

Why Choose Block Paving or Sandstone?

Beyond the looks, there are practical reasons these surfaces endure:

  • Individual repairs, a damaged or stained block can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the rest of the drive.
  • Design freedom, mix colours, shapes and laying patterns to give your driveway real personality.
  • Durability, quality blocks laid on a proper sub-base take decades of vehicle traffic in their stride.
  • Low maintenance, an occasional sweep and re-sand keeps joints tight and the surface pristine.
  • Added value, a well designed block paved or sandstone drive adds kerb appeal and genuine value to your property.

Our installation is scheduled around you, and our fitters work diligently to keep obstruction to your day to day routine to a minimum.

Premier Paving for Driveways, Patios & Paths

Block paving, porcelain tiles and sandstone are among our most popular paving services, and they’re not limited to driveways.

The same materials work beautifully for patios, pathways and garden areas, and because we handle groundworks, drainage and surfacing in house, we can take on the whole scheme rather than just one piece of it.

From a single path to paving the entire plot, front and back, the finish stays consistent because the same team builds all of it.

Residential, commercial or local authority, we see every paving project through from start to finish.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a block paving driveway last?

With a properly prepared sub-base and quality blocks, 20 to 25 years or more is realistic. Because individual blocks can be lifted and replaced, the drive can be kept looking fresh throughout its life. All our paving work is fully guaranteed.

Which is better, block paving or sandstone?

It's a question of style. Block paving offers crisp lines, uniform sizing and pattern options like herringbone; sandstone gives natural variation, warmth and rustic character. Both are durable and low maintenance when laid properly. We'll show you samples of each so you can decide at home.

How do I stop weeds growing between the blocks?

Correct installation is most of the battle, tight joints filled with kiln dried sand over a proper sub-base leave little room for weeds to root. An occasional sweep and re-sand keeps joints sealed. Weeds that do appear sit in surface debris, not the structure, and brush away easily.

Do I need planning permission for a block paved driveway?

Usually not. If the paving is permeable, or rainwater from an area over 5 square metres drains to a lawn, bed or soakaway within your boundary, it falls under permitted development. We design the falls and drainage in as standard.

Can you match my new driveway to my existing patio?

Yes, and it's one of the most effective upgrades you can make. We can match or complement your patio paving stones so the driveway, paths and garden flow as one continuous scheme.

How long does installation take?

Most block paving and sandstone driveways take three to five days depending on size, excavation and pattern complexity. We agree the schedule with you up front and keep disruption to your routine to a minimum.
